The one thing
01Anthropic and OpenAI both cut prices on the same Tuesday, and Anthropic's cut arrives attached to three migration errors.
Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) shipped on 22 September at $4 / $20 per MTok, against Opus 5's $5 / $25 — 20% off both sides, with a 1M token context window by default, 128k max output and always-on adaptive thinking.1 Hours earlier OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Sol at $2 / $10 and GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 / $0.50, each half its GPT-5.6 promotional price.2
The Anthropic cut is not a drop-in. Three request shapes that worked on Opus 5 now return 400 on Opus 5.5: thinking set to either disabled or enabled (omit the field and use effort instead), tool_choice of type any or tool (use auto with strict tool use), and, on the Claude API and Google Cloud, the computer_20251124 computer-use tool, which now requires computer_toolset_20260801. On Amazon Bedrock the old computer-use tool keeps working.1
So the discount is real and the migration is billable. A harness that pins tool_choice: any to force a call, or disables thinking on cheap turns, fails on the first request rather than degrading.
What else landed on the Claude API in the same note
Fast mode for Opus 5.5 is a research preview on the Claude API. No published limit or price for it, so there is nothing to evaluate yet.1
Tools can now be defined mid-conversation, in beta behind the inline-tools-2026-09-15 header. A tool_addition block carries a full tool definition, so you can add a tool, change its schema, or move a server tool to a newer version without editing tools and invalidating the prompt cache. With the MCP connector's mcp-client-2026-09-15 header the definition can be an MCP toolset, and the response records each server's fetched tool list in an mcp_tool_listing block that pins the list when you send it back.1
Opus 5.5 is also in the GitHub Copilot model picker as of the same day, and so are Sol and Luna.56
Shipped
03GPT-6 Sol and Luna ship at half their predecessors' prices
Sol goes from $4 / $20 to $2 / $10 per million tokens, Luna from $0.20 / $1.20 to $0.10 / $0.50, against GPT-5.6 promotional pricing.2 OpenAI attributes the cut to caching and inference improvements rather than a smaller model, and Astra remains the top of the family. Both are available now on the API and in the GitHub Copilot picker.6 The published prices are the part we can check; the benchmark tables beside them are OpenAI's own and are in Skip This below.
The prices, side by side
- GPT-5.6 Sol $4 / $20 → GPT-6 Sol $2 / $10 per MTok.
- GPT-5.6 Luna $0.20 / $1.20 → GPT-6 Luna $0.10 / $0.50 per MTok.
- Claude Opus 5 $5 / $25 → Claude Opus 5.5 $4 / $20 per MTok.
- All six figures are from the vendors' own pages, read 23 September. The GPT-5.6 numbers are described by OpenAI as promotional pricing, so the comparison is against a promotion, not a list price.
GPT-6 prompt caching gets a 30-minute reuse window, effort changes that survive the cache, and a miss diagnostic
Cache discounts now apply to eligible shared prefixes reused within 30 minutes, at up to 90% off cached input tokens.3 Two controls matter for agents: reasoning effort can be changed between responses without breaking cache, by appending a configuration_update rather than changing request-level effort; and tools should be masked with allowed_tools or tool_choice: none instead of being removed, so definitions stay stable. A diagnostics endpoint returns the reason for a miss — tools_changed, with the count of tokens that would otherwise have been reusable.

OpenAI quotes GitHub's Mario Rodriguez saying Copilot cut the share of prompt tokens needing fresh processing by more than 50% across billions of requests against their previous baseline. That is a customer testimonial on a vendor page, not a measurement we can reproduce, and we print it as such.3
Prewarming lets an application process known context — shared instructions, tool definitions, reference material — before the first user request arrives.
GitHub is removing SHA-1 RSA SSH signatures and a Diffie-Hellman key exchange, on a dated schedule
Four dates.4 From 14 October 2026, new RSA SSH keys must be at least 3072 bits, and the post-quantum mlkem768x25519-sha256 key exchange turns on. Brownouts of the ssh-rsa signature type and diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256 run on 4 November and 9 December. Removal is 13 January. Only Git-over-SSH clients are affected — if your remotes start with https://, none of this reaches you. Existing RSA keys do not need regenerating; they need a client that signs with rsa-sha2-256 or rsa-sha2-512, which most pick automatically.
Minimum client versions GitHub names
OpenSSH 7.2p1 · JSch 0.1.66 (from GitHub's named fork) · TeamCity 2021.2.3 · Go SSH 0.16.0 · libssh2 1.11.0 · PuTTY 0.82.
GitHub's note distinguishes the key type ssh-rsa, which covers all RSA keys, from the signature type ssh-rsa, which means SHA-1 specifically. Only the signature type is being removed.
GitHub Enterprise Server picks the removals up in 3.25, and the ML-KEM addition in 3.24. The ML-KEM key exchange does not come to the U.S. region of GitHub Enterprise Cloud with Data Residency.4
One date in GitHub's own schedule reads "January 13, 2026", which is in the past; from the sequence it is plainly January 2027. We have not seen a correction on the page.

The conversation
01A Reddit post named the model id, the codename and the release day 31 hours before Anthropic published anything.
- u/echamplin, r/ClaudeCode, 21 September 14:25 UTCreader-posted, and since confirmed against Anthropic's release notes
Wrote that Anthropic was stealth-testing Opus 5.5 as
claude-opus-5-5under the codenameclaude-wafer-eap, for release on Tuesday. The model id and the day both match the 22 September release-notes entry. The codename is not on any Anthropic page we read and remains unverified. - breckenedge, Hacker Newsreader-posted, unverified, single run
Reports Sol's performance on their internal dataset regressing to match Luna's, and says launch-day leaderboard positions may not survive re-running weeks later.
The leak was right about the SKU and right about the day, and told nobody the thing that costs time: that three request shapes stop working. A release date is easy to know early and cheap to be wrong about. A migration note is neither, which is why it only appears on the vendor's page.
breckenedge is describing a mechanism, not a measurement. One run on a private dataset is a reason to re-run your own evaluation in three weeks, not to act today.
The X layer did not run: the newest file in the ai-dev-x-accounts folder is dated 22 September but contains a placeholder instead of posts, and the newest ai-dev-x keyword digest is from 20 September, roughly 72 hours old and background only. The ai-dev-reddit digest for 22 September carries a single post — the one quoted above — and a live Reddit pulse across six subreddits returned nothing for the window. Hacker News was swept in full: 8 stories above 80 points, with comments. Treat the community layer today as thin and declared, not as a quiet day.
